CAN I TAKE MY BIKE ON A EUROPEAN TRAIN?

Where bicycle spaces are available, these must be booked at the same time as passenger tickets and cannot be booked online. It is always recommended to dismantle your bike and take it in a bag.

Please call us on 0844 848 5848* to make your booking. It is not possible to add a bike space to a booking that has already been completed.

 

A tip from Voyages-sncf.com: If you have not been able to take your bike with you, majority of French cities and big European cities offer a bike hire service. In Paris, "Vélib" bike hire is not expensive. This service is ideal for those who still want to cycle, even in the city.

On French trains

TGV:

  • A limited number of TGVs accept fully assembled bicycles.
  • The cost of a bicycle space is around £10 and must be reserved at the time of booking.
  • There are usually 4 bicycle spaces in Standard class on a TGV.
  • Alternatively, bicycles may be carried free of charge in a bike bag whose dimensions do not exceed 120x90cm. This counts as 1 piece of luggage.

 

Intercités de Nuit:

  • A bicycle area for fully assembled bicycles is available on most Intercités de Nuit trains.
  • Reservation is compulsory and costs around £8.50, payable at time of booking.
  • There are usually 6 bicycle spaces available per train.
  • Dismantled bicycles can be carried free of charge as long as they are folded in a bike bag, with dimensions no larger than 120 x 90 cm. This counts as 1 piece of luggage.


Intercités de Jour:

  • These trains accept fully assembled bicycles. The cost of a bicycle space is around £8.50 and must be reserved at the time of booking.
  • There are usually 6 bicycle spaces per train.
  • Alternatively, bicycles may be carried free of charge in a bike bag whose dimensions do not exceed 120x90cm. This counts as 1 piece of luggage.


TER:

  • Bicycles can be transported free of charge on most TER services.
  • Restrictions apply during peak hours (07:00 - 09:00 and 16:30 - 18:30 Mondays to Fridays).
  • Bikes can also be carried in a bike bag provided dimensions do not exceed 120x90cm. This counts as 1 piece of luggage.

On Eurostar trains (travel between France, Belgium and the UK)

Folding bicycles can be taken on any Eurostar train as long as they’re smaller than 85cm when folded. Before going through check-in, bikes also must be placed in a protective case that covers the whole bike.

 

Alternatively, passengers can reserve a place for their bike on their train, on London, Paris and Brussels routes. Customers should call 0844 822 5 822* or visit the EuroDespatch Centre in person at London St Pancras.

The service costs £30 one-way and customers must produce their Eurostar ticket or PNR number.

You can contact us and place a booking on hold before making a bike place reservation, which will provide you with a PNR reference.

Fully assembled bikes can also be transported via the Registered Baggage service, costing £25 per bike.

Tandems cannot travel due to their length, unless they can be dismantled.

 

Please note: If you are travelling to or from Ashford, Ebbsfleet, Calais, Disneyland® Paris or on Eurostar's Direct Ski services, you cannot take a non-folding bike or one that is bigger than 85cm long.

If you're travelling on Eurostar's Direct South of France services, non-folding bikes and bikes that exceed 85cm in length are not accepted on board but can be picked up and delivered to your destination with the train's partner company First Luggage.

On Thalys trains (travel between France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands)

  • Folding bicycles must be folded. Luggage is considered conventional if it does not exceed the following dimensions: 75 x 53 x 30 cm
  • For non-folding bicycles, the two wheels must be removed and the bicycle must be placed in a hard casing with a maximum dimension of 135 x 85 x 30 cm.

Travellers who are transporting a bicycle must report no later than 30 minutes before the departure of the train.

On TGV-Lyria trains (travel between Switzerland and France)

A limited number of TGV Lyria trains accept fully assembled bicycles.

 

The cost of a bicycle space is around £10 and must be reserved at time of booking.

 

There are 4 bicycle spaces per train.


Alternatively, bicycles may be carried free of charge in a bike bag no bigger than 120x90cm. This counts as one piece of luggage.

On TGV France-Italy trains

Bicycles can only be taken on board if they can be dismantled and carried in a bike bag no bigger than 120x90cm as part of the luggage allowance.

On ICE trains (within Germany)

Bicycles can only be taken on board if they can be dismantled and carried in a bike bag no bigger than 120x90cm as part of the luggage allowance.

On France Spain High Speed trains (travel between Spain and France)

Your bicycle is considered as luggage and must be dismantled and stored in a cover of 120x90cm max.

On AVE trains (within Spain)

Bicycles can only be transported on AVE trains running to/from Figueres Vilafant station, provided they are in a bike bag no bigger than 120x90cm. The bike bag counts towards the luggage allowance.

 

Bicycles (even in a bike bag) are not permitted on any other AVE trains.

On Italo trains (within Italy)

Bicycles can only be taken on board if they can be dismantled and carried in a bike bag no bigger than 120x90cm as part of the luggage allowance.

On international overnight trains

Thello: Overnight trains between France and Italy
Bicycles (even in a bike bag) are not permitted on Thello services.


CityNightLine: Overnight trains between Germany and France/Austria/the Netherlands / Denmark /Czech Republic/Italy and Switzerland
Bicycles can be taken on all routes, except Paris-Hamburg and Copenhagen-Prague. This is bookable locally.
